The final tally for my two auction items was $375, not enough for me to write a new Walker Papers or Old Races short story, but *more* than enough to prompt a FANTASY MEDLEY give-away. I’ve got one last ARC (advanced reader’s copy, as opposed to the finished version) I can send to someone, so this is your chance.
THE CONTEST: tell me (in no more than 50 words) what Old Races story you would like to see told. It doesn’t have to be something that comes organically from the books; you can just randomly want “a story about the djinn” or something.
THE CAVEAT: I may make off with one or more idea and turn it into a story at some point. :)
THE OTHER CAVEAT: This contest is also running at my main blog at mizkit.com/mizkit.livejournal.com, so it’s possible the winning entry won’t actually show up in *this* comment thread. I will, however, post the winner’s entry at both locations, so everybody’ll know who won and for what story idea.
THE WARNING: I expect there will be spoilers for the Negotiator trilogy in this thread. If you don’t want to be spoiled, stay out of the comments.
THE WINNER: will be the person whose story idea I like best!
THE DEADLINE: the contest will end on June 9th. :)
THE OTHER CONTEST: My agent, the incomparable Jennifer Jackson (who apparently started agenting at the tender age of nine), is celebrating her 16th year of being an agent by running a contest for ARCs and books written by her clients. Go read her instructions carefully and participate! :)

A story about “hybrid” races – like Janx is of fire and the djinn are of air, so what about coming across a creature who has properties of both – and neither? Maybe a creature of smoke and gas? Then between fire and water you can have a creature of steam and mirroring, between water and earth, one of mud and shape-chaning, and between earth and air, one that can maniupate time and space.
A kitsune! One of those little fox demons that play tricks. They can turn human or into a fox. In some stories, they are even a hybrid of the two.
I must admit the the djinn and the selkies don’t interest me so much as the power plays between Janx and Daisani do. I want to see the next time they meet and how the game plays out then, whenever it may be, and how the resurrected vampires change the scene. And what happened to the rest of the dragons?
If I was going to go with something not within the books at all, I’d LOVE to see an all out epic battle amongst the Old Races for dominance over the world. Who would side with whom? What tactics would each race employ? Who would be in whose pocket, and for what reasons? I’m envisioning this mostly before humans “took over” the world, at a point where the Old Races were still numerous and powerful enough to change the course of the world forever.
I know… more than 50 words. But 50 words can’t do an idea justice! :(
I’m past the deadline, just read your Walker books recently and first visit to website today (which I love that you reply to comments!) Anyway my idea is Goddess or Goddess hybrids – there are so many that have awesome ‘powers’ that you could use one or many as inspiration. Kali would be a formidable challenge, for example.
I would like to read a story about some of the past interactions between the main characters. How did they initially meet/interact? What about past friendships/agreements between them?
HAs a human ever been involved as a mediator before?
Thanks,
AP
