Welcome to 2010!

Happy New Year!

I’m guest blogging over at Temple Library Reviews about some of the differences between writing comics and novels. Thanks very much to Harry for inviting me to come play at his review site!

As reminded by several persons, THE PRETENDER’S CROWN has been nominated for the 2009 David Gemmell LEGEND Award for Fantasy. It’s on the long list, which is incredibly flattering, and it would be even more flattering to make it to the short list. My understanding is that voting between now and March will winnow the list down, so if you’ve any inclination, here’s the voting page.

And here’s this year’s publication schedule:

February: THE PHANTOM QUEEN AWAKES (anthology with a story of the Morrigan)

May: DRAGON LURE (anthology with a post-Negotiator-trilogy Janx story)

May 29: RUNNING WITH THE PACK (anthology with a Regency werewolf story)

June 1: DEMON HUNTS (book 5 of the Walker Papers. Birthday release date!)

August 31: TRUTHSEEKER (book 1 of the Worldwalker Duology)

Fairbanks book signing!

There will be a book signing event in Fairbanks, Alaska!

Where: The Fairbanks Barnes & Noble

When: 1-4pm on Friday, November 27th, 2009

What: I will definitely be signing, and my books will be for sale. I may do a reading or two, since I’ll be there a while.

Further details: The Fairbanks B&N is leaning toward mostly bringing in copies of WALKING DEAD to sell. I’m also encouraging them to stock up on first books in all of my series, but if you’re in the Fairbanks/North Pole/Nenana/etc region and would like books other than URBAN SHAMAN, WALKING DEAD, HEART OF STONE and THE QUEEN’S BASTARD, let me strongly encourage you to call then (907-452-6400) sooner rather than later to put an order in for the books you want. It’ll encourage them to have copies on hand, and they’ll be ordering books for the signing next week, so you’ll want to move briskly!

Chapters Bookstore & CE Murphy go international!

It is now possible to order signed & personalized copies of my books through Chapters Bookstore in Dublin, Ireland.

The catch to this is it’ll mean paying international shipping rates, which are stiff. On the other hand, I get to Dublin a lot more often than I get anywhere else, so it’s the best way to guarantee getting a signed copy of one (or many) of my books.

We’ll run this essentially the same way Neil Gaiman runs his Dreamhaven signings, which is to say I’ll drop by Chapters when I’m in Dublin and sign anything waiting for me, and the books will subsequently be shipped out. There will not be a pattern to this, although I will make a specific and deliberate effort to stop by Chapters at the beginning of December so that if anyone wants to send somebody a signed CE Murphy book for Christmas, it’ll get there in time.

Chapters doesn’t actually have an online ordering system, so to order my books you’ll need to contact shop@chapters.ie. To quote the lads at Chapters, One point to mention is that if people want personalised inscriptions they would have to pay in full in advance to protect us in the event of changes of mind etc. but I wouldn’t see that as being a major issue.

They *usually* have copies of all my books in. That said, however, it often takes about 10 days to get books from America to Ireland, so if you’re thinking of Christmas gifts, I would highly suggest getting orders in by mid-November in case they’re out of anything.

…and while I’m on the shameless self-promotion wagon, wouldn’t an Ireland 2010 calendar be a nice Christmas present for people? :)

Favorite Paranormal Author?

I have, it seems, been nominated as a Favorite Paranormal Author of the Year by readers at Bitten By Books. So’s Jim been, for that matter. Voters are allowed two votes each, so if you like, go vote! The poll is on the right-hand side, scroll down past the ads. :)

And oh, hey! I see that URBAN SHAMAN made it onto the 101 best fantasy novels list from a few weeks ago! How splendid, thank you guys!

TQB reprint & other news

I’ve been informed by my editor that THE QUEEN’S BASTARD has gone back to print for a fifth time. Presumably this is in response to a sales jump accompanying THE PRETENDER’S CROWN release, so I’m utterly delighted. Thank you all so much!

Someone asked recently if there would be more books in the Inheritors’ Cycle. I have plans for 2 or 3 more books in that series, but I haven’t yet sold them to Del Rey, the publisher for that series. I’ll be writing up a proposal toward the end of the summer, so hopefully I’ll have more information about whether the series will continue by the end of 2009.

In the meantime, DEMON HUNTS, book five of the Walker Papers, has been completed and delivered. There is, however, still time to bid to become a character in that book, and if bidding on both my auction items combined (the Irish gift basket is here) goes over $450 by the close of the auction on Sunday, I’ll write a new Walker Papers or Old Races short story for my internet audience. :)

And speaking of the Walker Papers, the mass market editions of books 1-3 should be available now! I’m ridiculously excited about these, as they’re my first mass market releases under the CE Murphy byline. May they be the first of many!

Release Day: THE PRETENDER’S CROWN

Today, my good people, is Release Day! THE PRETENDER’S CROWN, Book Two of the Inheritors’ Cycle, is on the shelves! I’ve written a bit about it here, at Suvudu.com (Random House’s sf/f website, where I’ll be posting weekly in the future), and now I come to do the dance of joy at my own website. :)

This is 8th C.E. Murphy book since June 2005 (10th if you count the anthologies), and my 13th published work in that same time frame. It puts me very, *very* close to the absolute culmination of what I set out to do four years ago in terms of shelf space, and I am *utterly* delighted by that. (Also relieved!)

I’m also pretty pleased with the book. Get your sex, politics, murder and betrayal right here, on a silver platter….and then buy a copy for your friends, so I can keep writing in this world. :)

Minor publishing news

I have, as of a few days ago, delivered TRUTHSEEKER, first of the paranormal romance duology due out from Del Rey in late 2010. TRUTHSEEKER is the story of Lara Jansen, who always knows when she’s being lied to–and who is therefore somewhat shocked when the new man in her life confesses–truthfully–to being a prince of Faery.

I’ll be starting book five of the Walker Papers in about ten days here. Keep an eye on the site, because I’ll be auctioning off a “Tuckerization”–a chance for a reader to have his or her name in the book as a character name.

Teaser for THE PRETENDER’S CROWN

A couple of quick notes here at C.E. Murphy.net on Valentine’s day…

Several people have emailed to ask when the next Walker Papers will be out. I’m delighted to let you know that book four, WALKING DEAD, will be out in September 2009.

It is, in fact, going to be a busy year for releases. This is what this year’s publication schedule looks like:

March: A FANTASY MEDLEY (anthology featuring a story of the Old Races)

May: THE PRETENDER’S CROWN (book two of the Inheritors’ Cycle)

June: mass market paperback re-releases of URBAN SHAMAN, THUNDERBIRD FALLS, & COYOTE DREAMS (books 1-3 of the Walker Papers)

September: WALKING DEAD (book four of the Walker Papers)

October: mass market paperback re-release of WINTER MOON (anthology featuring “Banshee Cries”, a Walker Papers novella); also, THE PHANTOM QUEEN AWAKES, a mass market anthology with an original short story about the Morrigan

November: TAKE A CHANCE graphic novel, compiling issues 1-5 of TAKE A CHANCE, my new superhero comic currently being released as monthly issues

Frankly, I’m exhausted. :)

It’s high time, too, that I showed off the cover for THE PRETENDER’S CROWN, and along with it, a teaser excerpt from the book. The scene is from chapter one, and Belinda has been summoned to discuss recent political developments with her mother the queen…
Read the teaser!

Sales & News

It is with delight that I announce the sale of two paranormal romance novels, TRUTHSEEKER and its sequel WAYFINDER, to Betsy Mitchell at Del Rey. Both books will be released in mass market paperback in 2010.

I’ll also be joining such illustrious authors as Katharine Kerr in writing a short story for Morrigan Books. The PHANTOM QUEEN AWAKES anthology will be available in October 2009.

A FANTASY MEDLEY available for pre-order

Subterranean Press presents A FANTASY MEDLEY: four short stories by four fantasy authors.

In “Zen and the Art of Vampirism,” Zoe Takano, the only vampire in Toronto, a city filled with supernatural creatures of Kelley Armstrong’s Otherworld, finds her place in the hierarchy threatened by two interlopers.

“Riding the Shore of the River of Death” returns us to the world of Kate Elliott’s Crown of Stars. Kareka, daughter of the begh of the Kirshat, hunts to take a man’s head. It is her last opportunity to prove herself as a man or else she will find herself restricted to the role of woman and wife in the clan forever.

Robin Hobb revisits her Farseer world in “Words Like Coins.” Mirrifen, a failed hedge-witch’s apprentice who has married to find security finds that threatened by a severe drought and the appearance of a pregnant female pecksie.

C.E. Murphy takes us to frozen Moscow in “From Russia, with Love.” Baba Yaga’s daughter is a barmaid at a dive when Janx and Eliseo Daisani walk in. They discover, as they compete for the girl’s affections, that Baba Yaga has plans for Janx and that her beautiful daughter had merely been the bait.
